Consultants warn care hit by poor deals on supplies

By Adam Brimelow Health Correspondent, BBC News

Many NHS hospitals in England are paying over the odds for supplies, a snapshot investigation suggests. The assessment by consultants Ernst & Young highlights big variations in the prices paid for a range of medical products.

The findings come despite long-standing concerns from MPs and the National Audit Office over wasteful procurement. The Department of Health says it is developing a barcoding system to help hospitals negotiate better prices. The NHS is coming under enormous pressure to find savings. But nearly two years after the National Audit Office (NAO) highlighted waste in procurement, this assessment suggests some hospitals are still getting poor deals on supplies.

Procuring Health Project and the Structure of the National Health Service in England

SOURCE: OUT-LAW.COM

There is a drive for greater efficiency and competition in the English health service (as elsewhere). This means that National Health Service (NHS) organisations are increasingly having to use collaborative approaches in their activities. This is also the case for those organisations with a continuing need for improved facilities in an environment where public capital is hard to come by. This has led to a greater use of novel commercial structures and processes in the NHS.

This is a guide to the different kinds of projects procurement that are undertaken in the health service. It also includes a guide to the structure of the health service to aid understanding of a complex network of bodies for those involved in health projects.

New central list for hospital supplies 'to save £500m'

SOURCE: BBC NEWS

A new central procurement list for NHS England aimed at ensuring hospitals get the best price for supplies could help save £500m, the government says.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said the "radical" move would ensure every penny of the health budget was spent wisely.

A "procurement tsar" will produce the list - made up of prices negotiated and set between the NHS and suppliers.

Jeremy Hunt says there is concern within the ageing population as to whether the NHS is going to be "financially viable"

But Labour said the government's overhaul of the NHS had wasted millions and these plans would not change that.

The new central procurement list will mean that hundreds of everyday hospital supplies will be bought in bulk to help harness the "buying power" of the health service.

'Spending wisely'

The government has committed to making savings of £1.5bn to £2bn on procurement by the end of 2015OR16.
